LONDON – Asif Kapadia’s The Odyssey is one of four specially commissioned short films to unspool as part of the London 2012 Festival.
Backed by way of a BBC Films and Film4 co-commission of four short films, Kapadia’s film will play out as one of four projects aimed at showcasing U.K. filmmaking talent during the 12 week Britain-wide cultural celebration. A Running Jump by Mike Leigh featuring Eddie Marsan, Sam Kelly and Samantha Spiro, The Swimmer by Lynne Ramsayand What If, directed by Streetdance directing duo Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini starring Noel Clarke, George Sargeant and Theo Barklem-Biggs will also feature. The last we heard on the project was from Welsh back in August, when the ‘Trainspotting’ author revealed that James McAvoy (‘X-Men: First Class’) was to lead the project, with Jamie Bell (‘The Eagle’) and Alan Cumming (‘Burlesque’) taking supporting roles. While Variety’s article has no mention of Cumming, it reveal that Imogen Poots (‘Fright Night’), Jim Broadbent (‘The Iron Lady’), Eddie Marsan (‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’), and Joanne Froggatt (‘Downton Abbey’) have all been added to the cast. Read More at Movie.ie One of the biggest downsides of not having the Harry Potter franchise around anymore is that there will be less opportunities for the greatest British actors working today to work together in one epic film franchise. But while there may not be any UK franchises like Harry Potter coming down the line yet, there are terrific smaller films like last year's Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy that will keep bringing these amazing thespians together. Now you can officially add the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Filth to that category as well.
